- Getting about at Colton House
Introduction- Colton House is a magnificent Grade II* listed home set in a quiet picturesque village on the edge of Cannock Chase with 10 double bedrooms, dining for up to 30 and buffet facilities for over 50. All bedrooms are ensuite with both baths and showers. This statement may not deal with all your needs so please ring us on 01889 578580 if you would like to discuss any matter.
- Pre Arrival
We have our own web site http://www.coltonhouse.com which gives lots of information about the house and some photos.
You may find it useful to look on trip advisor http://www.tripadvisor.com to get an idea of what other guests think of their stay.
- Booking
You can book on line via Visit Lichfield or by phone, fax or email.
When you book we will ask you a few questions so we can ensure we can look after you appropriately when you arrive.
Details and menus can be provided in large print by prior arrangement.
- Getting here
There is no bus service to our village. The bus station is in Rugeley, approx two miles away. A taxi from there would cost about £5. There is a local taxi service (01889 584545) that has accessible taxis if required.
East Midland and Birmingham Airports are both within 40 miles. There is a west coast line train station (Rugeley Trent Valley) just a mile from our home.
- By Road
From M6 junction 12
At Junction 12 take the A5 to Cannock. At the A34 turn left onto A460 to Rugeley.
In Rugeley at the roundabout with A51 take the second exit onto B5013 towards Uttoxeter
Continue for 2 miles, turn right into Colton, we are the three storey Georgian house half a mile along on the right.
From M1 - Junction 24
At Junction 24 take the A50 to Uttoxeter, then A518 for 2 miles
Turn onto B5013 towards Rugeley after 8 miles
Turn left into Colton, we are the three storey Georgian house half a mile along on the right.
From M6 Toll Road - Junction T4
At junction T4 join the A5 going west (sign posted Brownhills)
At the first roundabout take the 2nd exit signposted A5 Brownhills.
At the next roundabout take the 2nd exit towards Lichfield (A5127).
At the next roundabout just past the railway bridge take the 2nd exit (A51) sign posted Stafford.
Stay on the A51 for about 4 miles until you see the sign B5013 for Abbots Bromley.
At this roundabout take the 3rd exit and follow the signs for Abbots Bromley.
Staying on the B5013 go 1 Mile past the Yorkshireman pub (keeping it on your right) and then turn right into Colton. Colton House is the three storey Georgian house half a mile along on the right
- Arrival
On arrival at the property you can park at the front or go round the left hand side of the house (through the double entrance gates). These are closed every night. There are no marked parking bays but there is room for 15 cars. The surface is level, flat blocked paved and in good condition.
We can assist with guest's luggage etc. There are no steps if entering the building via the back door.
The B&B is situated within the village.
- Main entrance and reception
Reception can be approached from the front or back door.
If the front door is locked please ring the door bell, if not enter and ring the bell at reception.
All the doors on the ground floor are between 82-86cm wide and the whole floor is at the same level.
On entry into our home there is a hall 5m x 5m.
There is seating provided in the hall.
- Public areas - General internal
Our corridors to the ground floor and dining room are at lease 1m wide and the doors between 82 to 86cm wide.
Corridors have a good colour contrast and are well lit.
The flooring throughout the house is short pile carpet.
If you have blind dog, please talk to us about arrangements.
The breakfast room is on the ground floor.
There are 7 stairs to the first landing, 6 stairs to the second landing followed by a further 8 stairs to the first floor bedrooms. These stairs are 14cm high, 33cm deep and 1.3m wide.
Then there are the 9 stairs to the next landing, 7 stairs to another landing followed by a further 5 stairs to the top floor bedrooms. These stairs are 14cm high, 33cm deep and 1.2m wide.
There is a second stair case that also serves all floors that has treads 30cm, risers of 16cm and 1m wide. It has short pile carpet.
- Public areas - WC
There is a fully equipped disabled WC on the ground floor.
- Dining Room Bar and Lounges
Breakfast is served in the dining room on the ground floor. There are no steps.
Furniture is flexible and can be moved on request.
Tables have an under space of 62cm high x 115cm wide and height of 74cm (legs on each corner). All chairs have no arms. Menus can be provided in large print.
We do play background music or use the radio in the dining room.
- Laundry
Available - with a laundry bag in all bedrooms returns the same day generally.
- Outdoor facilities
There is a large garden where games are played on occasions - croquet, lawn darts etc. We have a large garden of with flower borders, lawn and vegetable patch for residents. There are strategically placed benches placed around the 1.5 acre garden, and, on the patio, tables with umbrellas.
- Conference/Meeting Room/Banqueting/Entertainment
Are available by negotiation.
- Bedrooms
There are 10 bedrooms, none on the ground floor, 5 on the first floor and 5 on the top floor.
There are a range of bathrooms with different facilities all have WC, washbasin shower and bath, all except one have a tiled floor. Some have: - a sunken bath, a shower with no step to get in, grab rails, Jacuzzi.
Door widths, main and bedrooms are generally 85cm wide; bedrooms can have a double or twin beds. Furniture is generally not moveable.
Single beds are 75cm wide, double bed are between 1.35-1.8m wide and between 2m - 2.1m long.
Televisions have remote control and Freeview.
Two armchairs or a settee are provided in most bedrooms, and are fitted with short pile carpet.
Free WiFi is available in all rooms.
- Additional information
Assistance dogs are welcome. Mobile phone reception is generally good.
We are able to use the front and back doors (4 doors) in the event of evacuation; the fire alarm rings continuously in all rooms and also flashes if evacuation is needed. If you require more assistance for evacuating please notify us on arrival and we will ensure that you are evacuated safely.
We are a no smoking building, smoking is allowed in the back garden which has level entry and a bin is provided.
We supply a small mini bar in the bedrooms which can be used for medication/food and we can put larger items in the main fridge on request (not available 24hours).

Hours of operation: all year, the B&B is our home so occupied 24 hours per day. The telephone can be answered 24 hours a day.
- Future Plans
We are refurbishing our windows (48 in total 35 complete) to be able to provide better existing and additional bedrooms as well as improved conference facilities and public areas. We are also improving the water pressure to all our showers (two thirds complete).
